Operation Shanela, remains steadfast in stabilising crime in the province. The multi-disciplinary high density operations conducted between 21 and 24 September 2023, with emphasis on the reduction of contact crimes and property related crimes in hotspot areas.
Actions executed over the weekend culminated in the arrest of 664 suspects for different offences. The arrested suspects amongst others, included 9 for rape, 89 for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), 53 for assault common, 17 for robbery aggravating, 23 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, 8 for illegal dealing in liquor, 10 for burglaries at business premises, 22 for possession of drugs and 16 for dealing in drugs.
During the operations and execution of various actions, 4 372 persons and 2 049 vehicles were searched. The operation also led to the inspection of 116 licensed liquor premises, 20 second-hand goods dealers and fourteen recyclers /scrapyards. Furthermore, 8 unlicensed liquor premises were closed, while 35 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing by Immigration Officials.

Liquor
Various drugs (crystal meth, mandrax and nyaope)
Four cellphones
Eleven firearms
In one of the operations conducted in Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 1(Brits), police in Mooinooi arrested two suspects, aged 24 and 25 on Thursday, 21 September 2023, for possession of an imitation firearm, different types of cigarettes and three cellphones. The police cannot rule out the possibility of linking the pair with business robberies in Brits and Mooinooi. The two suspects are expected to appear in the Brits Magistrates’ Court soon on a charge of business robbery.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, thanked the members for the commitment they have displayed since the commencement of Operation Shanela by ensuring that those who transgress the law are brought to book.
