A total of four suspects, who are suspected to be among the mob that attacked police detectives in Reston, East London, were arrested and are expected to appear in court on Monday, 09 October 2023.
It is alleged that on Thursday evening, 05 October, at about 22:00, a group of Reston residents attacked and injured police detectives who were working in the area. It is further alleged that as the officers were arresting one of the suspects, the mob started attacking them with sharp objects. Officers retreated without any retaliation. They were later treated at the nearest hospital.
Cases of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened. Four people aged between 32 and 37 were arrested and are due to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 09 October 2023, on the respective charges.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zithulele Dladla condemned the attack and added that, we cannot allow lawlessness to rein in our communities. We condemn the attack on police officials in the strongest possible terms, and we expect to see more suspects behind bars at the later stage of the investigation. Those who attack police officers must know that police officers also have a legal right to defend themselves.”
