Accused found guilty and sentenced to twenty five years imprisonment for series of robbery cases

Shane Ngutshane was found guilty and sentenced by the Mhala Regional Court on Tuesday, 14 November 2023, for series of robberies.

Ngutshane appeared in court on three cases and was found guilty and sentenced as follows:

1. Possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, which took place at Culcutta in July 2020. He was sentenced to seven (7) years imprisonment.

2. House robbery, which took place at Hazyview in April 2014, he was sentenced to fifteen (15) years imprisonment.

3. Possession of stolen motor vehicle (Section 36), which took place at Masoyi in April 2014, he was sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment.

Accused effectively sentenced to TWENTY FIVE (25) years imprisonment.

The accused was part of the so-called “Ellysis” gang who terrorized the community of Mariti and Calcutta.

During 2020, after consultation between Crime Intelligence and DPCI, the former Provincial Head instructed the DPCI to investigate cases where members of the “Ellysis gang” were involved.

The cases against the gang members are still pending in Mhala regional court.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks applauded the multidisciplinary team for the collaboration between the DPCI, Crime intelligence, and the prosecution authority in Mpumalanga.

He further appreciated the community for the information provided, which led to the arrest of the gang members.
