Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a suspected hitman who is linked to the murder of five people and the attempted murder of two other people who were ambushed in Tongaat in March 2023.
Two men were shot and killed inside their vehicle on Gopallal Road in the Tongaat CBD before three security guards who were escorting the chairperson of a taxi association were shot and killed inside their vehicle, a short distance from where the two were killed. Two people also sustained gunshot wounds in these incidents. Police officers attached to the Provincial Taxi Violence Unit worked tirelessly in tracing the suspect and on 7 January 2024, 24-year-old Sphelele Gumede was traced and arrested at his hiding place in Emanguzi. He appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on 8 January 2024 and his application for bail was successfully opposed. He will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on 12 March 2024.
In a separate matter, intensive police investigations have uncovered the whereabouts of a man suspected to be behind the house robbery and theft incident which happened at a homestead in the Mpusheni area of Umbumbulu. On 8 March 2023, the victims were at their home when suspects forced entry into the house and demanded money and other belongings. They also forced victims to transfer over R60 000 into their bank account, before fleeing the scene with a motor vehicle belonging to one of the victims.
A warrant of arrest was granted and issued against one of the suspects. Intelligence was gathered and Ayanda Siboniso Majola (32) was traced and arrested in Gqeberha on 6 February 2024. He made a brief appearance at the Umbumbulu Regional Court on 8 February 2024 and was remanded in custody until 14 February 2024 for a formal bail application.
