Concerted efforts to fight gang violence through the removal of firearms from the streets in the Steenberg policing precinct led to the arrest of a male suspect when he was caught in possession of a firearm without a valid license.
Members attached to the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit were busy with stop and search operations in the Lavender Hill area when they received information about a suspect who is in possession of a firearm in Military Road. The members followed up the information and saw the suspect fitting the description that was circulated. The suspect was searched upon which they found firearm with ammunition in his possession. The 47-year-old suspect was arrested and detained for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
He is due to make a court appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
In an unrelated intervention members of Mitchell’s Plain police arrested a 17-year-old suspect when he was caught with a firearm in his possession. The members were busy with crime prevention operation in Eastridge, Mitchell’s Plain due to the ongoing gang violence in the area when they stopped and searched the suspect and found the pistol with ammunition in his possession.
He will make a court appearance in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.
