The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Gerber, welcomed the sentence imposed on a former drivers licensing examiner, Christoffel Fick (64), who was found guilty and sentenced by the Emalahleni Regional Court on Wednesday, for Fraud and Contravention of Sec 4 of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.
The sentence followed after information was received and investigated by the Hawks’ Mpumalanga based Serious Corruption Investigation. The information indicated that an official was soliciting gratification from applicants who were to be tested for drivers’ licences.
The investigation was carried forward and an undercover operation was authorised and executed. It was discovered that the applicant was never tested but issued with a licence to drive the vehicle.
The examiner was confronted after issuing the driver’s license to the applicant and the accused was arrested. A case docket was registered for further investigation. He appeared in court on several occasions whilst on bail.
On 10 April 2024, Mr Fick was sentenced by the Emalahleni Regional Court as follows:
18 months imprisonment which is wholly suspended for five years’ on condition that the accused is not convicted on fraud during the period of suspension.
In addition the accused was sentenced to a period of three years’ correctional supervision.
The Provincial Head, Major General Gerber issued a stern warning to law enforcement officials to perform their duties with integrity and honesty. He further said that no one is above the law. He concluded by saying that “as the Hawks we shall investigate all priority crimes and bring perpetrators thereof to justice, without fear or favour.’’
