Suspects arrested for double murder and one fatally shot during a shootout with police

On Tuesday, 09 April 2024, members of Hawks Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s Provincial Tracking Team and Anti-Gang Unit together with other police units with the assistance of private security companies were following up on information about suspects who were sought for a double murder case where a mother and child were gunned down in their vehicle just outside China Mall, Springfield Park in Durban last year December.

Members proceeded to Zinkwazi in Stanger where they arrested a 36-year-old male. The police initiated an operation in search for the second suspect who was traced to the freeway west-bound in Mount Edgecombe in Durban. Members attempted to intercept his vehicle but he failed to stop, instead he fired shots towards the police and the police returned fire. The suspect’s vehicle overturned in the high-speed chase. The suspect was fatally wounded. One (1) 9 mm firearm pistol found in his vehicle. It will be subjected to ballistic testing to establish any linkages in the commission of any crime in the country.

The arrested suspect furnished information about another suspect who was at Greenwood Park in Durban and the police proceeded to the identified premises where a 37-year-old male was arrested. One (1) 9 mm firearm pistol and live round ammunition were confiscated which will also be subjected to ballistic tests. Both suspects were charged for double murder and both are Mozambican nationals.

The police investigation continues and the duo is expected to appear before Durban Magistrate’s court today, 11 April 2024.

The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona commended the members for the good arrest and thanked God that his members have survived when they were being shot.
