The Senate of ActionSA, the party’s highest decision-making body, has decided against including the reintroduction of the death penalty as a party policy.

This is reportedly in contrast with the wishes of party leader, Herman Mashaba, who wanted the party to push for the return of capital punishment in South Africa.

The party recently concluded a four-day strategic planning session, ahead of a policy conference later this month, with the return of the death penalty being rejected as a possible policy proposal.

Michael Beaumont, ActionSA’s chairperson was quoted by News24 as saying: ‘ActionSA’s Senate resolved that the party will not support the reintroduction of the death penalty, but rather focus on accountability measures which ensure that life in prison means life in prison, and not the 25 years it currently is.’

Beaumont also said: ‘The solutions adopted by the conference will set the stage for the creation of the party’s manifesto that will give millions of South Africans a real alternative to the existing political establishment and reinvigorate hope ahead of our first-ever bid in the national and provincial elections next year.’
