A former Springbok hooker has been released from hospital, but his father is still in critical condition after a farm attack in the Northern Free State on Saturday morning.
According to reports, at least seven gunmen overran Lukas van Biljon and his father André on their farm at Oranjeville in the early hours of the morning. The ex-hooker was stabbed multiple times while his father was shot three times in the chest.
OFM News learns Van Biljon’s young sons were present during the attack on their father and grandfather. The attackers allegedly threatened to kill the boys if Van Biljon did not give them money.

Martin van Biljon, Lukas’ brother, wrote on Facebook on Saturday that one hears about farm attacks and farm murders, but this only becomes a reality when it happens to your own people. “My heart is broken today. How can one be so cruel? We may not hate and retaliate, but I find it difficult on this Saturday.
‘That’s not how we’re supposed to live’
“What can you do if you’re woken up with a 9mm to your head? Luke tied up, stabbed him repeatedly with a knife. Kicked him; said they were going to shoot his son to death in front of him if he didn’t want to give money. My old brother shot three times in his chest… Children spared.”
“This is not how we are supposed to live,” Johnny Burger wrote on Facebook. “Fear every day knowing anything can happen to every how.”

He asks people to pray for the Van Biljons and urges farmers to be careful. “It’s not getting any better for sure. Take care of your people with everything. Be awake. You never think it can happen to you.”
“It is very clear that the South African government does not have a plan that will work to prevent farm attacks,” says Jan van Niekerk, Free State FF Plus leader in response to the attack.
“Therefore, we urge farmers to safeguard themselves and defend themselves within the framework of the South African Constitution, as the Constitution also allows us.”
‘It’s important that we apply pressure’
Van Niekerk says it happens too often that criminals who are on parole or the suspects who are out on bail are linked to farm attacks. “Which makes it very clear that South African citizens are actually being abandoned by the legal system of our state. It’s important that we apply pressure to make sure these people stay behind bars.”
The FF Plus will monitor this matter to ensure that the people responsible for this attack are arrested and denounced, says Van Niekerk.
Lukas van Biljoen played a total of 2001 times in Test matches for the Springboks between 2003 and 13 and five times in the Rugby Championship. The Bloemfontein native played for several provincial teams, including the Sharks and the Stormers.
