Bill Gates on Thursday unveiled a $7 billion fund for African nations to accelerate advancements in gender equality, agriculture, and other crucial fields.
The investment would be made available through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation over the course of the following four years, according to the founder of Microsoft.
“The big global challenges we face are persistent, but we have to remember, so are the people solving them,” Gates told students at Nairobi University during a function. “Our foundation will continue to support solutions in health, agriculture, and other critical areas — and the systems to get them out of the labs and to the people who need them.”
According to the foundation, Gates traveled to Kenya this week and stopped at smallholder farms, renowned medical research facilities, and primary healthcare facilities to learn from local and regional partners about what initiatives and strategies are effective, what challenges still need to be overcome, and how the foundation can better support future development.
The Kenyan presidency said Wednesday that the foundation will set up a regional office in Nairobi to “expand and enhance the Foundation’s work in healthcare, agriculture and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in Kenya.”
Gates told more than 500 students and thousands across Africa, who watched the event online, that Africa’s young people have the talent and opportunity to accelerate progress and help solve the world’s most pressing problems.
The organization is pleading with world leaders to step up efforts to identify answers and improve systems in African nations. This includes funding initiatives that might potentially save millions of lives, create opportunities for the world’s most vulnerable citizens, and invest in people and innovations.
