The Hawks have arrested yet another fugitive on Interpol’s Red List in the town of Paarl in the Western Cape.
Police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale says a 55-year-old Namibian attorney was arrested in a joint operation with Interpol earlier this week.
The suspect is wanted on charges of racketeering, fraud, corruption and money laundering.
Colonel Mogale says, in 2020, several people mandated his services, unbeknownst to them that he had been suspended from practising as an attorney in 2016.
The suspect was subsequently struck off the roll of attorneys last year.
Col Mogale says it was then established that he was a fugitive and an arrest warrant and extradition notice was authorised by the Paarl Magistrates Court.
He says the suspect had over R3 million deposited into his trust account to render legal services.
The man will appear in the Paarl Magistrates Court on Friday.
He is the second fugitive on Interpol’s Red list to be arrested in Paarl in the past two weeks.
Rwanda
On the 24th of May, a Rwanda fugitive, 61-year-old Fulgence Kayishema was arrested on a farm in the area.
The former police inspector allegedly played a significant role in the planning and execution of an attack at a catholic church in 1994, leading to the deaths of more than 2 000 people.
Kayishema lived under an alias and informed the South African Government that he was a Burundian national needing refugee status.
He will make his second court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Friday.
Bulgaria
On the same day of Kayishema’s arrest, another one of Interpol’s Red Notice fugitives was murdered in Constantia.
Krasimir Kamenov was one of Bulgaria’s most wanted organised crime figures.
Kamenov, his wife, bodyguard and nanny were also killed.
