Intercape passengers travelling to Eastern Cape are currently counting their loses after the broke down bus was ambushed by armed robbers who reportedly took belongings and cellphones.
1kzntv News reported that the passengers commuting to Eastern Cape were robbed by six armed men on the R56, near Thornville, in Pietermaritzburg.
This reportedly happened when the mechanics were busy working on the fault on the broke down Intercape Sleeperliner model on the shoulder lane of the road.

“The bus broke down just after France in Pietermaritzburg around 8:35 and a group of boys wielding firearms took our cellphones.”

No injuries were reported, and the bus company has not released a statement regarding the alleged incident.
Criminal attacks targeting the Intercape brand have become common over the years. This is backed by the number of attacks on the fleets which have seen the shooting of drivers and ultimately risking the lives of passengers on board.
However, these attacks have gradually decreased thanks to the arrest of an Eastern Cape man who was linked to a series of these bus attacks.
The arrested man made his first court appearance on Monday, 15 August 2022, in Bishops Lavis, Western Cape.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, said Unathi Sitsili (accused) is charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder. The State alleges the 28-year-old is linked to a spate of shootings on Intercape buses in Cape Town between March and April 2022.
The State opposed Sitsili’s bail application last year as he is charged with Schedule 6 offences.
This is a developing story. An update will be published once new information is available.
