The Gauteng Health Department has urged people to report to nearest health facilities when they have mild to severe diarrhoea and dehydration symptoms after it confirmed a third case case of cholera.

The case was reported on Tuesday, 7 February in Johannesburg and is that of the husband of the first confirmed patient.

    ANOTHER CASE OF CHOLERA REPORTED

According to Gauteng Health, the patient presented with symptoms at a health facility and was immediately admitted on Saturday, 4 February for further tests to be conducted.

He is reportedly in a stable condition.

This follows two other cases that were reported on 1st and 3rd February in Johannesburg.

The first patients are two sisters who had recently travelled to Malawi from Johannesburg before returning by bus on 30 January. Both patients developed cholera symptoms upon their return.

One of the patients went to a local clinic before being admitted to the hospital. Later, during the case investigation, the patient’s sister revealed she also developed diarrhoea while travelling back to South Africa from Malawi, but it resolved within a day, and she did not seek further medical treatment.

PUBLIC URGED TO PRACTISE PROPER HYGIENE

The department has urged people to visit their nearest health facilities when they present with mild to severe and watery diarrhoea and dehydration symptoms.

“Furthermore, we urge the public to practise proper hand-hygiene which includes thorough washing of hands with water and soap before and after using the bathroom and also when preparing or eating food,” the department said.

The department has reportedly activated outbreak response teams and surveillance efforts have been increased working closely with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, World Health Organisation and the National Department of Health to monitor the Cholera cases.
