Heavy rain hit Johannesburg overnight, and flooding has been reported across the city. On Friday morning, 9 December, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) advised residents about a number of bridge and road collapses.

    FLOODING IN JOHANNESBURG

The Roodepoort area is one of the areas most affected by the flooding, and critical road infrastructure has been damaged, said the JRA.
Motorists are advised to avoid the following:
    • Kilburn Street and the bridge as it is flooded and the road is collapsing on both sides.
    • Wilgerood Road, where a section has been washed away.
    • Schlapo Street in Groblerpark is also flooded.
“JRA is currently working to secure all areas, our depot is inundated with calls. We will update [the traffic advisory] as more information becomes available,” said the Agency.

Soweto experienced flash flooding; Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla said there were many reports of homes being flooded. The Johannesburg EMS advised residents to avoid low-lying areas and bridges.
The City EMS said most parts of Johannesburg would be affected by flooding and encouraged residents to not drive or walk through any flooded roads.
For emergencies dial 112 on a mobile phone or 011-375-5911 from a landline.
The Rea Vaya Bus service suspended its service on Friday due to the road conditions. “Commuters will be informed as the service is back,” said the Johannesburg bus service.
