According to an official statement, the Portfolio Committee on Tourism’s chairperson, Ms. Tandi Mahambehlala, asked Minister Patricia De Lille about the issue of Trevor Noah appearing in a 5-minute promotional video that will cost South Africans R33 million. The advert is to be used by tourism to promote Mzansi on a global platform.

Minister De Lille has vehemently denied that the vast amount will be coming from taxpayer coffers.

As stated on Parliament.gov.za : “The Minister clarified that the R33 million was a contribution from the Tourism Business Council of Southern Africa. However, Ms Mahambehlala likened the R33 million 5-minute video promo by Trevor Noah to the recent controversial Tottenham Hotspur marketing strategy and called on the Entity to stop it. She warned South African Tourism that the TOMSA levies contributed by TBCSA to the entity should not be used as a slush fund to commit financial maleficence.”

Noah is currently in the country as part of a 12-show South African tour.
