It cost the taxpayer R83 264 992 to deploy nearly 2 800 military medical personnel to public hospitals for less than a month amid the Nehawu strike in the health sector.
Defence Minister Thandi Modise confirmed in a letter that from March 8 to 30, nearly 2,800 military medical personnel were deployed to assist at public hospitals following the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) strike.
AfiNUUS is in possession of a letter dated March 13 that Modise wrote to National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula informing her of the deployment “to provide assistance to the National Department of Health”.
“The deployment will be for the period March 8 to March 30. The total number of members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will be 2 800,” Modise said.
“The deployment of the members is authorized under the Defense Act.”
