Deputy President David Mabuza, who was replaced as the ANC party deputy at the elective conference last month, has reportedly informed President Cyril Ramaphosa of his intention to resign from office.
    DAVID MABUZA REPORTEDLY RESIGNS
According to reports, Mabuza is offering to step down ahead of an imminent cabinet reshuffle by Ramaphosa. He believes he is making things easier for his successor by doing so.
According to TimesLive, the outgoing deputy president told Ramaphosa he wants there to be an alignment between the leadership positions of the ANC and the national government.
News24 also reported that Mabuza spoke of the importance of aligning “party leadership roles with government responsibilities.” This all but confirms that Mabuza is making way for Paul Mashatile – his ANC Top 7 replacement – in the executive.
An announcement on changes to the executive has not officially been made, however, Mabuza’s resignation letter reportedly found its way to Ramaphosa’s desk earlier this week.
Mabuza declined a nomination from the floor of the ANC’s 55th Elective conference in December and ruled himself out of contention for the party’s second in command.
Mabuza is the first ANC deputy president in our democracy not to be elected president. Thabo Mbeki was Nelson Mandela’s deputy from 1994 until he succeeded him in 1994.  Mbeki was eventually replaced by Zuma, who was his deputy until 2008.
    This is a developing story.
