Three men allegedly involved in the theft of 98 sheep and murder of a man who tended the cattle have been arrested in Gauteng.
Free State police spokesman, sergeant. Mahlomola Kareli, said the 33-year-old man, Hlompho Patrick Phale, was found with his hands tied and with a gunshot wound to the stomach at the farm.
“On Saturday, 27 May 2023, at 08:00, the Zamdela police received information about a murder on a farm near Amelia in Zamdela. Upon arrival, police found a 33-year-old shepherd with both his hands tied with a rope and a gunshot wound to the stomach.
“The police also found that about 98 sheep had been stolen from the farm,” Kareli said.
According to Kareli, the matter was reported to the police by the farm owner after his neighbour informed him that Phale was dead.
“The farmer, who lived not far from his farm, was called by his neighbour who came across the victim,” Kareli said.
Kareli said the three suspects were arrested in Gauteng within 48 hours of the incident.
The police opened a case of murder and stock theft, and investigations were launched.
More arrests are expected, and police are also searching for the other missing sheep.
The men appeared in the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court today on charges of murder and stock theft.
