Farm burglary: Safe with firearms, household items stolen, 2 arrested, Swartruggens

Martin Nyakula (40) appeared in the Swartruggens Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 May 2023, on charges of housebreaking and theft. He will reappear in court on Wednesday, 10 May 2023 for legal aid.

The accused was arrested following an intelligence driven operation conducted by SAPS Boitekong in collaboration with Phokeng K9 Unit, Rustenburg Public Order Police (POP) and Swartruggens Detectives on Friday night, 5 May 2023, in Swartruggens.

According to information, a burglary was reported on Friday, 5 May 2023, at a farm in Swartruggens where intruders allegedly stole a safe containing rifles, a 9mm Glock firearm with ammunition, three plasma televisions, cameras and a motor bike.

Subsequent to gathering of intelligence, the team proceeded to Sunrise Park where Martin Nyakula (40) was arrested for burglary and theft.

The following items were found in his possession: 2 x gas cylinders, 1 x cutting torch, 1 x grinder, 1 x five pound hammer, 1 x chain block and other housebreaking implements with an estimated value of R300 000.00.

The team members proceeded to an address at Meriting Riverside where Charles Makgatho (46) was found.

During the search, four rifles with ammunition, two plasma televisions as well as a queen size bed were found and seized.

The accused also appeared before the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court in Tlhabane on Monday, 8 May 2023, for possession of suspected stolen property and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The case was postponed until Monday, 15 May 2023, for a formal bail application.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, congratulated members for working tirelessly in making sure that criminals such as these ones are put behind bars. Moreover, he applauded members of the community for assisting the police in ascertaining that the suspects were exposed and brought to book.
